Building greater cross-cultural competence: an intermediate level course
Improving the cross-cultural communication skills of staff can save time and resources by leading to more successful encounters with international students. It can improve the student experience and relieve pressure on staff. Cross-cultural skills cannot be learned from a one-off course – staff need regular opportunities to reflect on their experience and practise skills in a safe environment. This course therefore builds on UKCISA’s “Introduction to cultural awareness and sensitivity” course to allow staff to develop an opportunity to extend their skills and knowledge.
It will provide staff with an opportunity to reflect on their approaches
to cross-cultural communication, consider how models of cultural difference
can inform their thinking and practise new skills and strategies.
Course aims
To increase cross-cultural awareness and skills of international student advisers working with students on a one-to-one basis and in groups.
Course objectives
Participants will be able to:
- identify “hotspots” in cross-cultural encounters where clashes and misunderstanding can occur
- apply appropriate models of cultural difference to help understanding and inform responses
- identify and use a variety of cross-cultural communication skills and strategies
