Frontline responses to the mental health needs of International Students
A one day, hands-on training in developing basic skills to respond to the mental health needs of international students especially at times of confusion and crisis.
Course aims
- to enable participants to review and deepen their understanding of the mental health needs of international students
- to review the distinctive types of mental ill health and psychological distress in the context of student life
- to look at the knowledge, skills, roles and team work available to college based personnel in providing a frontline response to the mental health difficulties facing international students
- picking up the signs of distress and trouble, contributing to constructive care, reducing the risk of unhelpful responses and promoting early and effective help
- reflecting on some of the ethical and personal issues involved in helping someone across cultural, language, national and professional barriers.
Course objectives
Use case material and exercises to help develop the following
skills:
- familiarity with the signs of, and ways of, coping with serious mental illness
- link between stress, isolation and psychological difficulties increasing the risk of an episode of mental illness
- skills in linking with combined sources of help with minor, sudden or recurring and serious mental health problems
- reflection upon values, and beliefs about the common and distinctive features of the international student experience which relate to mental illness and health
